David CLARKSON(185) (186). Mention of David
in "HISTORY OF ALBEMARLE COUNTY IN VIRGINIA", by: Rev. Edgar Woods.
Five Clarksons filled a considerable space in the early history of the county, Peter,
John, William, James and Manoah. There is documentary evidence that three of these were
brothers, John, William and James, sons of David Clarkson, who came from Amherst; it is
probable the other two were also brothers in the same family. There seems moreover to have
been three sisters, Mary, the wife of Thomas Carr, Susan, the wife of John Lewis, the
father of Jesse, and Letitia, the wife of Zebulon Alphin.
Parents: John CLARKSON and Mary.
Children were: John CLARKSON, William CLARKSON, James CLARKSON, Susan CLARKSON, Mary CLARKSON, Letitia CLARKSON, Peter CLARKSON, Manoah CLARKSON.
James CLARKSON(187) was born in 1734 in VA.(6)
He signed a will on 3 Sep 1828 in Albemarle Co, VA.(188)
He died on 6 May 1829 in Albemarle Co, VA.(188) (189) James Clarkson made his home in the forks of
Hardware (River), his place embracing the mouth of Eppes Creek, and being the same
afterwards owned by the young patriot, Roberts Coles, and now in the possession of Tucker
Coles. He bought it from William Champe Carter in 1799. He suffered from the burden of
debt, and to secure it placed his property under a deed of trust; but he must have
arranged his affairs successfully, and in 1828 he and his wife Elizabeth sold his farm to
Thomas Maupin, son of William. He died in 1829 at the advanced age of ninety-five. A son
Reuben removed to Meade County, Kentucky, and another, Julius, married Margaret M.,
daughter of John Thomas. Julius died about 1835, and in 1838 his widow was married to
Robert Cashmere. (Taken from "HISTORY OF ALBEMARLE COUNTY IN VIRGINIA", by: Rev.

James Clarkson Will
Albemarle County Courthouse, Charlottesville, Virginia (Book 10, pages 131-132)
In the name of God, Amen, I James Clarkson of the County of Albemarle and State of
Virginia, being sound in mind, memory and understanding, but calling to mind the certainty
of death and the uncertainty of the time thereof, do make this my last will and testament,
revoking all wills and parts of wills, heretofore made by me, declaring this to be my only
last and true one as follows:
Imprimis - I recommend my soul to Almighty God, and my body to be decently buried at the
discretion of my executors herein after named.
Item 1st I give and bequeath to my beloved wife Betsy Clarkson the tract of land, whereon
I now reside, during her life, together with all the slaves, stock of horses, cattle, hogs
and sheep, household and kitchen furniture, farming utensils, entire as they may be at my
death, except such parts of my property as may be hereafter named specially and given to
others; with the privilege of disposing of the household and kitchen furniture at her
discretion, during her normal life and widowhood.
2nd I give to my son Nelson Clarkson one dollar to be paid, by my executors after my
decease.
3rd I give in trust to my grandson Wm Clarkson (son of Nelson) what portion of my estate
his father would have been entitled to for the equal benefit of himself and his brothers
and sisters, deducting from said portion the one dollar his father.
4th After the death of my beloved wife it is my will and desire that all my estate both
real and personal be sold (except one negro named Mary) and the money disposed of as
follows: I give to my son Reuben Clarkson two hundred dollars which is all he is to
receive from my estate. I give to my daughter Sarah Johnson the one third part after
deducting the above sum to Reuben Clarkson. I give to Mary Maupin one third after making
the same deduction and to Wm Clarkson my grandson as before named in trust the remaining
third after making the same deduction.
5th I give to Mary Maupin one negro girl named Mary and her increase from this time
reserving to my wife the use of said negro during her life which negro is to be charged to
Mary Maupin at two hundred and fifty dollars on her account.
6th Whereas I have made advances to my children in various way as to money and property
and for the purpose of doing justice to them all I have raised an account for each of them
in a small book kept for that purpose and have charged them with the advances made them,
which must be taken and considered as a part of their portion, before the division can be
made as set forth in item the 4th.
7th In order to prevent any disputes from arising among my legatees after my decease, I do
hereby require that should any difference arise among them, they shall leave the matter in
dispute to any two uninterested men, such as they may choose, and should any one refuse an
arbitration and should institute a suit or suits, he, she, or they instituting such suit
shall forfeit all the interest they could have in my estate. Lastly. I do hereby appoint
my son in law Thomas Maupin and my friends Thomas Amonett, Nicholas Hunnier and James
Hunnier my executors to carry into effect this last will & testament and that they
will use all due diligence to have my just debts discharged. In witness thereof I have
hereunto set my hand and seal this third day of September eighteen hundred & twenty
eight.
