John COMPTON(125) (116)(109)
was born about 1730 in NJ.(116) John Compton left
New Jersey with his family and that of Abraham Compton (b. ca 1750) and arrived in Augusta
County, Virginia in the fall of 1772. It is unclear how Abraham was related to John
Compton. He may have been a younger brother, nephew, or possibly a son by Johns
first wife Lydia. John Compton bought 411 acres of land in Botetourt County, VA on May 5th
1775. Abraham Compton also relocated to Botetourt County. On February 11, 1778 John
Compton was commissioned by court order to determine a suitable landing for a ferry
crossing the James River from Crows Island. Tragedy struck in the spring of 1778 while
John Compton was clearing new ground beside the Bluestone River. A tree limb fell and
fatally injured him.
Tragedy also hit the Abraham Compton family when he was killed in the line of duty while
serving in the Continental Army during the Revolutionary War. His widow, Mary Compton,
married John Brickey, and they moved to Russell County, VA.
An Inventory of John Comptons estate on May 9, 1778 showed a value of 552 pounds.
Some of the items in the inventory were: 11 head of horses, 25 cattle, 1 wagon, 17 sheep,
2 plow forms, 7 pairs of horseshoes, 30 hogs, boar gun, 2 saddles, numerous tools, and
household items.
John Comptons widow, Margaret Raemer Compton, married William Aston on April 16,
1780 in Botetourt County, VA. Margarets son, Joseph Compton, brought suit against
his mother and William Aston for the division of the Compton Estate. There is a land
transaction on record between these parties when Joseph sold 281 acres of land, in
Botetourt County, to William and Margaret Aston for 200 pounds of Continental money.

about 1710. Parents: William COMPTON and Mary
BOWNE.
He was married to Providence ISSELSTYNE on 13 Dec 1694 in Monmouth Co, NJ.(109) Children were: Isselstyne COMPTON.
William COMPTON(116) was born about 1644 in Long Island, NY. He died
about 1709 in Middleton, Monmouth Co, NJ. William Compton moved from Long Island, New York
to Monmouth County, New Jersey in 1666. He had just married Mary Bowne in Long Island, and
they migrated along with her family. Sarah, the sister of Mary Bowne Compton, was the
great great grandmother of President Abraham Lincoln. Mary and Sarah were the daughters of
Captain William Bowne and Mary Haverland. Daniel Boone, the frontiersman, decended from
the same couple and was therefore a cousin to President Abraham Lincoln.
The reason the William Compton and Bowne family originally left Long Island, New York in
1666 was to escape religious persecution. Both families were Baptists and their faith was
unpopular with the New England hierarchy. The Compton and Bowne families established the
first Baptist Church in Middleton, New Jersey. William Compton received a warrant for 280
acres of land in New Jersey. In December 1667, he received town lot number 15 in the
division of Middleton, New Jersey. He was also awarded Salt Meadows. William Compton had
his livestock earmark recorded as a half penny under the left ear. He paid quit rent to
the king in 1696 on 250 acres of land which was located on Shoal Harbor near Middleton,
New Jersey
Parents: William COMPTON.
He was married to Mary BOWNE. Children were: Judith COMPTON, Cornelius, Sr. COMPTON, Richard Sr COMPTON, Jacob COMPTON.
William COMPTON(116) was born about 1622. The first two Comptons in
America were John Compton, who migrated from Kent County, England to Roxburry,
Massachusetts before 1634, and William Compton, born about 1622, who settled in Gravesend,
Long Island, New York before 1647. These two men are the forefathers of almost everyone
who descends from comptons in the United States. It is not known how closely related these
two colonial men were. John Compton was admitted to membership in the Boston,
Massachusetts Church in 1642.
William Compton previously mentioned was a freeholder in Gravesend, Long Island, New York
and lived among the Dutch who spelled his name Weilleum. He was on the list of 39
patentees in 1645. According to Gravesend town records, on November 24, 1657, Nicholas
Stillwell sold the home lot plantation #29 to William Compton with house and barn for 400
pounds of good tobacco to be delivered on April 1st of the next year.
He was involved in additional land transactions in 1658 and 1659 in Gravesend. William
Compton stated in a deposition in 1652 that he was thirty years old. He served as
Constable of Gravesend and was sworn into office June 29, 1677. Apparently this William
Compton died on Long Island, New York. Since this William Compton by best evidence had a
son named William, it is likely that it was his son William who migrated to New Jersey.

Javan is listed as a Revolutionary War pensioner on the 1840 McNairy Co, TN Census. He is
found on the National Archives Revolutionary War Pension and Bounty Land Warrant
Application Files and also on the "Tennessee Pension Roll of 1835". His pension
started on 4 FEB 1834 when he was 73 years old. He received $60 as an initial payment and
was to receive $20 annually.
According to information found in Rev. War Pension Records Javan left North Carolina when
he was 56 years old (1817) and moved to Logan Co, KY where he spent 6 years. Census and
Kentucky court records contradict this and indicate he was in Simpson Co, KY during at
least three of those years (1820-1823). The pension records then show that he moved to
Monroe Co, MS for three years (1824-1827) and finally to McNairy Co, TN in 1828 where he
died in 1850.
He was married to UNKNOWN before 1790 in Edenton District, Currituck Co, NC.(248) On the 1790 Census of NC, Javan and his wife are the only people listed for that household. Elizabeth had not been born and that probably means they were only married shortly before 1790. Children were: Elizabeth COX, William COX.
