John MACKEY⁽¹⁸⁾ died in 1773. ⁽³⁷⁷⁾ John Mackey is said to have been an explorer in the Borden Tract area as early as 1720. He settled first at Buffalo Gap east of the present city of Staunton, Virginia and moved to the Borden Tract in 1739. On this land his sons built a stone house in 1796. It was still standing in 1936. It was one of the finest houses in that part of Virginia. The stone walls were two feet thick. Two large chimneys, seven feet wide and three feet deep were built inside the walls at each end of the house. This land was in the Mackey family for at least two hundred years.
