(WARNING) The connection between Benjamin Porter and the William Porter shown as his son in this database is undocumented and should not be accepted as fact. At the risk of perpetuating an error already in many databases, I have decided it is better to acknowledge than to ignore the problem.  The connection is being maintained for the present, with this warning, and perhaps new evidence will resolve the problem.

The following is a discussion by Mary E. Porter taken from " A Family History William Porter, Jr. of Rockbridge County, Virginia (1740-1804)"

Some researchers have believed that he (William Porter) was the son of Benjamin Porter, Sr. who had a grant of land in Orange County in 1726. This lineage, undocumented, has appeared in several publications. However, Benjamin Porter's land was across the Blue Ridge Mountains and many miles from the Borden Tract (where William Porter's land was located). No evidence was found suggesting a connection between Benjamin Porter of the 1726 grant and the William Porter of this study. There is some evidence that suggests otherwise.

In the first place, the land of the Borden Tract was open to settlement only to persons not then residing in Virginia. A copy of the original grant states:

"George II, by the grace of God of Great Britain, France, and Ireland, King, Defender of the Faith, etc... To all to whom these presents shall come, greeting: Know ye that for divers good causes and considerations, but more especially in consideration that Benjamin Borden, late of the Province of New Jersey, now of the County of Orange, in Virginia, hath lately caused to be imported and settled on the land herein after mentioned one family for every 1,000 acres we have given, granted and confirmed...to the said Benjamin Borden... one certain tract or parcel of land containing 92,000 acres...being on the west side of the Blue Ridge in the County of Augusta (in process of being formed at that time. Set off in 1745) and on the north and northeast branches of the James River...".

Almost, if not all, of the settlers in this tract were Scotch-Irish who came up the Shenandoah River Valley to its headwaters and settled on the upper reaches of the James River and its tributaries.

Another reason for believing that this William Porter was not born in Virginia is that at least one Porter who appears to have been his brother was from Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. Samuel Porter, a school master from Dromore Township, secured a patent for 300 acres of land below the forks of the Buffalo in 1748. This land is just a few miles from William Porter's later purchases in the Borden Tract. There is a court record in Augusta County of payments for improvements on Samuel Porter's plantation below Buffalo Creek in 1753. There is also a record of his marriage to Eve Johnson and the indenture of her child. Samuel Porter sold this land to James Dryden, a neighbor of William Porter, in 1756 and John Mitchell, son-in-law of said Porter, handled the transaction.

There were many Porters in the early records of southeastern Pennsylvania. Perhaps this is where the settler in the Borden Tract came from. One writer states that "William and Jean Porter came into western Virginia directly from southern Pennsylvania where they had migrated from Ireland in the 1720's". There is no documentation for this statement, but it could be true.

In the McCampbell Genealogy, published by Charles H. McCampbell, he states, "In the year 1729 the good ship George and Ann sailed from Ireland loaded with immigrants bound for America. They landed that same year in Philadelphia. On this ship were the following families: Allen, Armstrong, Irvin, Logan, McCampbell, Buchannan, McCloskey, McAfee, McNutt, McCune, and Tilford". All of these names except two appear fifteen years later among the purchasers in the Borden Tract. Tilford's land adjoined some of Porter's.. It seems highly probably that this Porter family was in this "Great Migration" from northern Ireland when thousands of Scotch-Irish landed in Philadelphia and other northern ports.
