In 1855 he sold his property and stock with the intention of going to Kansas, but instead bought eighty acres in Prairieton Township, Christian County ( T.S. 13 N, R 1 E). By 1968 his farm included 660 acres in Sections 4, 5, 8, and 9. In politics he was a member of the old Whig Party and later a Democrat. Parents: David WORKMAN and Lydia BILYEU.

Michael WORKMAN⁽⁸⁾ was born in 1802 in Allegany, MD. He died in Bourbon County, KY.⁽⁶²⁷⁾ Michael came with his father to Kentucky and was the only one of the children to remain there. As will be remembered from the story of Jacob Workman, Michael, with his brothers James and David, inherited the extensive Kentucky holdings of the family and it was not too long before Michael had managed to gain control of nearly all of it either through trade or sale. James took his equity arid moved to Ohio for a time, then returned to Kentucky to live in Robertson County. David soon followed the elder brothers to Sangamon Co., Illinois, but Michael remained in Kentucky. Records of Michael and his family have been difficult to find, probably because of the estrangement of the brothers over the handling of the father's affairs. However, when a nephew, Oliver G. Workman, visited in Kentucky years later he learned that Michael was married to a Tilly and had two sons: Samuel and Richard.

Nothing further has been learned except that Mrs. Mary Workman located some of Michael's descendants in Huntington, W. Va., but did not succeed in obtaining their records. It was to this younger brother that John Workman74 sent the third copy of his book so that there would be a record of the family in the old home place. This record was handed down and last heard of in Paris, France, but not actually located.

The name Tilly may have been a nickname or she was possibly a third wife for land records disclose the names of at least two other women who married Michael. In Deed Book X page 48 of Bourbon Co., Ky: "This indenture made the 16 Sept. 1829 between James Workman and Tena his wife, Michael Workman and Ruth his wife and David Workman and Lydia his wife, (David and wife of Overton Co., Tenn.; James of Bracken Co., KY.; and Michael of Bourbon Co., Ky.) Party of the first part and Patrick Lott of Bourbon Co., party of the second part, witnesses: that the party of the first part for and in consideration of the sum of $1339.00 in hand paid conveyed and sold to the party of the second part Tract of 113 acres and 39 poles of land in the County of Bourbon on the waters of Indian Creek, a branch of Stoner, devised to the party of the first part by their father Jacob Workman. Signed by:

David-signed his name; Lydia-made her mark; Michael made his mark; Ruth signed her name; James signed his name; Tena signed her name.

On the 27th Sept. 1826 these same heirs (Book T p. 67) sold another parcel of land. Ten years later, 19 Feb. 1836 Michael and his wife Nancy conveyed land in Nicholas Co., Kentucky. On Feb.17 the same year Michael and Nancy conveyed another parcel of land situated on the Hinkson river-both of them making their mark. From this we deduce that Michael married (1) Ruth .........; (2) Nancy.........; (3) .........Tilly. It is possible that they kept no family records as neither of them seems to have known how to write. They were very astute in the acquirement of property, however. "I bequethe my sowlle to Almighty god & my bodye to be buryed in the churche yarde of kings stanley.

I geve and bequethe to very of my childers That ys to say to RICHARD, UMFFREY, WILLIAM, JOHN, THOMAS and EDWARDE one kowe to be delyvered to eyther of them ageynste the tyme of their maryage.
