Note: The children of John present another problem with the "Workman Family History". According to the book, the first child was named John and born about 1760 in NJ. Later research identifies another son, also named John and born 1775 in MD. Nearly all of the documentation that has been found concerns the second John (b: 1775). Some researchers question the existence of the first John.

In support of the first John, there are mentions of John Bilyeu first appearing on the 1790 Kentucky census. If true, this would seem to rule out a John born in 1775, who would only be fifteen and not likely to show up as a "head of household" on various records. I have not been able to find a John Bilyeu in 1790 KY.

The information I have indicates the 1790 Census was reconstructed from tax payer lists. (First Census of Kentucky 1790 compiled by: Charles B. Heinemann, Genealogical Publishing Co., Inc., Baltimore, MD, 1981).
