Peter BILYEU^{(77) (2)} was born in 1779/80 in Allegany, MD. ⁽⁷⁸⁾ The Workman Family History gives a birth date of 1777, but Peter is listed in the 1850 Sangamon census as 70 years old which would put his birthdate at 1779/1780. He died on 7 Jul 1863 in Christian Co, IL. ⁽⁷⁸⁾ The family moved from New Jersey/Maryland to Kentucky, Tennessee and then Illinois. The association and mutual respect of the John Workman and Bilyeu families was such that the two were to become pretty much as one. Just when Peter Bilyeu migrated from Maryland to Kentucky is not known, although his brother John appears in the census records as early as 1790. It was probably some time later that Peter made the move. He and John Workman (b: 8 Apr 1789) were no doubt friends while in Maryland and it is likely that it was letters from Peter that induced John Workman and the rest of the Workman family to move to the southern state.

Although their children were all born in Kentucky and Tennessee, the Bilyeu family answered the call of the west, migrating to Illinois about the same time that the John Workman family did. They settled and lived in Sangamon, Christian and Shelby Counties. About three miles west of Moweaqua, Shelby, Ill., is the Bilyeu Cemetery where many of these people and their descendants are buried. (From the Workman Family History by Thelma C. Anderson)

Note: Many references are made to the Bilyeus living in Green Co, KY, but little evidence can be found to support this. One of the problems may be the failure of any of the Bilyeus in KY to spell their name the same way twice or it may have to do with later boundary changes.
