LIBRARY GETS FAMILY BIBLE GENEALOGY, by Mary Bland Armistead, Senior Writer
A Brickey family chronology, beginning with the arrival of an ancestor, Jean Bricquet,
from France in 1680, is preserved in the center pages of a bible given the Virginia Room
of the Roanoke Public Library.
The leather-bound volume, printed in 1815, has been in the Brickey family since 1852 when,
during a family reunion in Potosi, MO., John Compton Brickey of Catawba Valley presented
it to his son and namesake. The Bible contained records of his childrens births,
marriages, and deaths.
He was a great-great-grandson of the immigrant who left France because of the persecution
of the Huguenots, lived in Charleston, SC, went to Maryland where his name was Anglicized,
and he is believed to have lived in Annapolis. Later, the immigrant lived in Westmoreland
County, where records of the Brickey family in Virginia began about 1690. Raymond L.
Brickey of Roanoke, who is completing a genealogy, "The Brickey Heritage", said
all the Brickeys in America are descended from Peter Brickey, the immigrants only
son to have male children. Of them, John Brickey who married Mary Garner, came to the
Catawba Valley of Virginia about 1775, and the original donor of the family Bible was his
grandson. The Catawba Valley and Craig County abound with Brickey descendants, the
Roanoker said.
J. W. Gonterman, Jr. of St. Louis, a nephew of the late John Compton Brickey and Mrs.
Norville Brickey of Festus, MO., last owner of the Bible, presented it to Carol Tuckwiller
of the Virginia Room staff July 12. Ms. Tuckwiller also accepted other Brickey records
from Thomas "Coke" Brickey who came from Seminole, FL for the occasion. Ms.
Tuckwiller said the Bible is as valuable for the family genealogy it bears as it is
interesting for its original bookmarks, and the hand stitched repairs on some of its torn
pages.
He was married to Alce (Alice/Elsie) CRABBE about 1669 in France. Children were: John BRICKEY, Garard BRICKEY, Jencyn BRICKEY, Mary BRICKEY, Peter BRICKEY, Ursula BRICKEY.

John Compton BRICKEY(9) was born on 3 Jun 1782 in Botetourt Co, VA. He died on 8
Jul 1864 in Potosi, Washington Co, MO. (125) Most
of the following is taken from an autobiography of John Compton Brickey written in 1855.
John started his education at the age of twelve, attending school for six months of the
year, and walking two miles to get there. When he was sixteen his father gave permission
for him to study surveying by living with a tutor twenty miles from home. He worked for a
time as a stone mason, building chimneys, and later ran his fathers distillery for a
year. Then, he bought surveying instruments and moved to Maryville, Blount County,
Tennessee. His surveying business was successful, but during the winters of his second and
third years in Tennessee he began to study Latin. He then studied law under the Hon. Enoch
Parsons, obtained his license to practice law in 1811, and made plans to move west of the
Mississippi River. About this time he fell in love with and married his first wife, Lydia
Smith, in Maryville. John and Lydia then moved to Missouri, first Belle Fountaine where
his law practice was not very successful, and later Potosi where he taught school. He was
appointed a clerk of the County in 1814 and later also appointed as a justice of the
peace, a position that was more profitable than the clerk of court position. In 1820 his
wife and a son, Josiah, died during an illness that hit the entire family. John married
his second wife, Sally Brown, in 1825. During this time he resigned as clerk of court and
started his law practice again for a couple of years. He still couldn't support his family
and returned to teaching which he did until 1834. His second wife, Sally, became ill and
died in July of 1835. John remained in Potosi for a number of years, but by 1850 he was
living with his son, John Compton Brickey Jr. in St. Genevieve County, Missouri. The
Brickeys had a family reunion in 1852 at which time he presented a family bible to his
